One thing that I have learned in the sports sessions I’ve been to so far is to focus on the little things. Journalist Jeff Pearlman told us over and over to take the little and make it big. He told us a story about walking around the Yankee locker room and seeing one of his coworkers ignoring all-stars like Derek Jeter to talk to players like the back-up catcher and the bullpen coach. He wants to know something more interesting than ‘oh what did you think about the first inning?’. The best stories are features stories. You can wrap these stories inside game coverage since that is something we still need to cover.
A few things I learned about making our sports section the best it can be is to blog about games instead of covering them a week later or not talking about them, hang out at practice as much as you can to get a sense of what is really going and have the best relationship you can have with the coaches and people that work in the athletic offices. There are so many little things we can do to improve the entire paper that I’ve learned so far and it’s not even half way done!
