College Media Network, the company that runs College Publisher, which The Beacon and many other college newspapers use as a platform for their websites, has announced plans to charge almost $2000 a year for what has been free. Yes, it’s a bombshell and it will hurt small colleges/universities the most because the company will waive the fee for college sites averaging 25,000+ page views a month. But maybe it’s the catalyst we need to pursue better alternatives (Hello again, WordPress!).
I see new opportunities for entrepreneurial web developers and other techies who understand college media.
