So, I’m sitting in the airport at the end of a very fun and informative trip. Today we only had one workshop, a keynote and an awards ceremony to attend.
I went to a workshop with Hannah, Roya and Nancy was on investigative reporting at a private university. Let me tell you, the girl on the panel was simply delightful… (o.0). Actually, she was kind of scary, but she had some good tips for finding sources and getting them to talk.
The keynote speaker was Steve Benson, a cartoon artist. I have never given much thought to cartoon artistry before that lecture. I never realized how effective and fun cartoons can be in a newspaper.
He showed us a ton of cartoons that pointed out the hypocrisies and idiosyncrasies in public officials’ lives from politicians in the 1800’s to Tiger Woods today. The cool thing about them was how effective they were and how you didn’t need to read 700 words of text to get the big picture.
The entire workshop wrapped up with an awards ceremony. Guess what? The Beacon placed 7th in the “Best of Show” awards for weekly newspapers at 4-year colleges and universities from around the country. Woot! Honestly, I’m really proud of the staff for that one, especially Andy. The Beacon would be SOL without him, so give him a hug next time you see him. And don’t let him even try to pretend he doesn’t like it. XD.
